Method
Crack the egg into a mixer bowl, add the sugar, salt, and vanilla. Whisk until pale and fluffy.
In a separate bowl, combine the flour and yeast, mixing well.
Add the water, milk, vegetable oil, and the flour-yeast mixture to the whipped eggs. Knead thoroughly into a smooth dough and form into a ball.
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator to rise for about 1 hour.
Punch down the risen dough for 1-2 minutes. Divide the dough in half, then roll each half into a log. Cut each log into 4 pieces.
Flatten each piece, pull the edges inward, and roll into a ball.
Roll each piece out into a rectangle, brush generously with melted butter, and sprinkle heavily with sugar.
Roll up the rectangle into a tight cylinder and firmly pinch the edge to seal.
Fold the cylinder in half and make a lengthwise cut down the middle, stopping just short of the folded end. Open out both sides to reveal a heart shape.
Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them proof.
Brush the proofed buns with beaten egg and bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) until done, about 30-35 minutes.
