Method

Wash, peel, and thinly slice the potatoes to about 2 mm thick. Grate the cheese.

Grease a baking dish with butter, leaving a few small pieces at the bottom to prevent the potatoes from sticking.

Layer some of the potato slices overlapping in the dish. Season with salt and pepper. Add a pinch of nutmeg to the heavy cream and pour a portion of it over the potatoes, then top with grated cheese.

Repeat the layers in the same order until all ingredients are used up, finishing the top layer of cheese with pats of butter.

Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 40-50 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for another 10 minutes at 210°C (410°F) until golden.
