Method

Slice the potatoes into thin rounds. Slice the onions into half-rings or quarter-rings. Grate the cheese on a box grater.

Melt 60g of butter in a skillet and sauté the onions until soft and translucent—don't let them brown. Transfer to a plate.

Add another 80–100g of butter to the pan and let it melt.

Layer the potatoes in a baking dish, season lightly with salt and pepper. Scatter some of the cooked onions over top and sprinkle with cheese.

Keep layering potatoes, onions, and cheese until everything is used. Finish with a top layer of potatoes. Dot with small pieces of the remaining butter.

Bake in a preheated 200°C (400°F) oven for 20–25 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
