Method

1

Boil the potatoes in their jackets until tender. Let them cool and peel.

2

Hard-boil the eggs. Let them cool and peel.

3

Fillet the lightly salted herring and dice finely.

4

Finely chop the onion and place it in a suitable bowl. Add sugar, salt to taste, and vinegar. Pour in hot water so that the onion is completely covered. Let sit for 10 minutes.

5

Using a serving ring is very convenient for assembling the salad. If you don't have one, you can simply layer the salad directly onto a serving dish.

6

Layer 1: coarsely grated potatoes + a mayonnaise grid

7

Layer 2: finely diced herring fillets

8

Layer 3: pickled onions, having first drained off the liquid

9

Layer 4: finely grated egg yolks + a mayonnaise grid

10

Layer 5: half of the finely grated cheese

11

Layer 6: coarsely grated egg whites + a mayonnaise grid

12

Layer 7: the remaining cheese

13

The layered "Herring Under a White Coat" salad is ready! Remove the serving ring, garnish to your liking, and it's ready to serve.
