Method

1

Gather all your ingredients. Crack the egg into a bowl, and set aside a small amount of egg white (about a teaspoon) in a separate container for later.

2

Add the salt, sugar, milk, and melted or well-softened butter. Mix well with a fork until smooth.

3

Add the flour and baking powder, then knead into a soft, pliable dough that doesn't stick to your hands. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes.

4

Roll out the dough as thin as possible. Using a round cutter 6–7 cm in diameter, cut out circles.

5

Brush a thin line of the reserved egg white onto each circle. Stack them in piles of 5. Place a sixth circle on top, but do not brush it with egg white.

6

Gently press down on the stack with a wooden skewer, then flip it over and press from the other side.

7

Heat vegetable oil in a saucepan. Drop the pastry in — it will start opening up immediately. Fry until golden brown.

8

Immediately dust the finished pastry with sugar or powdered sugar.
